Singing Christmas Tree

For the past four years I have directed the Murphy Singing Christmas Tree. This program has been a popular event for the community for thirty years and usually draws in more than 1,000 people from the community to attend. We have three to four nights of performances each December.

Music Ministry Objectives

Under His guidance, with the pastors and people, a music minister should personally experience and humbly lead others in:

  • Pleasing God by engaging in real worship; the priority of our lives & churches; seeking God wholeheartedly;  Exodus 34:8

  • Loving God’s family and enjoying real fellowship; Loving God and one another;  John 13:35

  • Becoming like Christ & learning real discipleship; a lifestyle of worship & discipleship in church & community;  Mark 8:34

  • Serving God and practicing real ministry;  Beginning with community missions and ministry;  1 Samuel 12:24

  • Fulfilling our mission by living out real evangelism; Every church activity should outreach oriented; Matthew 28:19

The Four P’s

Frequently I remind Singers and Instrumentalists of what I call “the four “P’s.” As Worship Leaders, we are to:

  • Praise the Lord;  Our Lord is the only one Worthy to be Praised and Exalted; Exodus 15:2

  • Proclaim the Gospel; (Preaching through the music to see lost Saved, Redeemed, Revived and God Focused) Psalm 71:16

  • Prepare the Church to receive God’s preached Word; 1 Corinthians 1:21b

  • Provide opportunities for God’s people to use their talents in serving the Lord; Psalm 30:4

Philosophy of Ministry

I am a Southern Baptist by conviction and by choice.  I believe the bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God and it is the sole foundation and authority for our faith and practice. I believe this perfect Word of God needs to be studied, taught and lived.  I strongly believe that it teaches that everyone must place their personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.  I am a lifelong student of the Word and a born again Christian committed to loving God and loving others.

My philosophy of ministry is summarized in Colossians 3:16-17 (NIV) “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Since God commands that music be used in the church, we should offer praise & worship to God with singing and instruments.  Our Lord is Worthy of all Praise!  The minister of music should be a catalyst to lead people to sing aloud and enthusiastically unto God, making a joyful noise, remembering that God deserves our best.

Call to Ministry

1.      During my senior year in college I felt the Lord calling me into full time service.  The churches that I had served part time during school had given affirmation to this call.  It was at this time that I realized a need to attend seminary for further training.
2.      There are several “spiritual markers” that I can look back upon to see how the Lord was at work in my life years before I realized it.

Testimony

At the age of 11 ½ on March 16, 1965 I prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. During revival services at my home church, the Holy Spirit convicted me of my need to repent of sin and accept the gift of eternal life. The Lord spoke to me as Revelation was read, “Behold I stand at the door and knock, if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to Him...”  That was the most important decision I’ve made in my life and one that I have never regretted.

Baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

It is a joy to observe the ordinance of baptism.
